With the undisputed success of the Motorola Droid, the Droid 2 is looking to follow in its footsteps.

The Droid marked Motorola’s triumphant return to the cell phone industry, as it was the subject of not only incredible commercials, but also absolutely positive reviews from industry experts and cell phone users alike. The Droid was also the first Android phone to hit Verizon Wireless, setting off a firestorm of Android mania among die-hard advanced device users. Not only were business professionals flocking to the Droid, but so, too, were high school and college students, and stay-at-home moms and dads. While the Droid definitely had its downfalls, particularly in a difficult to use keyboard, it was, for the most part, an ideal phone in every aspect. As with any other successful phone, rumors soon substantiated hinting at the possibility of a second droid, appropriately named Droid 2. Behind the great success of the first Droid, the Droid 2 is definitely set to make a major splash in the wireless industry.

While at this time, specifications and features of the Droid 2 have basically been pure speculation, pictures have shown a revamped keyboard. Arrow keys and an OK button have replaced the directional pad, which was the subject of the only real complaints about the device. Although some are likening the OK button to a Windows mobile phone, it is important to distinguish between the highly regarded Android OS, and the Windows OS, which has often been regarded as either the greatest thing since sliced bread, or incredibly buggy. Aside from the keyboard, the other confirmed change is that the Droid 2 will have a 1GHz processor, making it incredibly fast. The Droid 2 is also slated to be more grayish or silver than the black color of the original. Aside from those changes, the Droid 2 is looking to be even better than the critically acclaimed Droid.

The Droid 2 is set to be released around the same time as the Motorola Shadow, another highly anticipated device from the manufacturer that was once left for dead. The Droid 2 will differ from the Motorola Shadow in that it will have a keyboard. The Shadow is looking to be similar to the Droid Incredible in that it will lack a keyboard. Other specs of the Motorola Shadow include an 8 megapixel camera, a 4.3” screen, MotoBlur 2.1, 720p video recording, and 16 GB onboard memory. If the Droid shares some of these specs and features, it will undoubtedly be the best phone on the market to date.

With the Motorola Shadow, iPhone 4 HD, Blackberry Bold Slider, and the HTC EVO 4G all slated for summer 2010 release, the Droid 2 is set to have some tough competition. However, with the success of the first Droid, and Motorola’s revamped image, it will definitely do well. More than likely, the Droid 2 will also feature Android 2.2, which is also known as Froyo, making it an even better buy than most could have ever imagined. If you are in the market for a new cell phone in 2010, then the Droid 2 will definitely be an excellent choice.
